Sumptuous, capricious and sensual, controlled by the majestic Atlas Mountains, the so called « the Pearl of the South » cannot fail
to be impressive to the visitors and the first impression that it offers us is true to the various literary descriptions, so is it a
passionate description or a deja vu? In all cases, it is simply unforgettable.
It has been declared as World Heritage Site by UNESCO and is one of the most prestigious and emblematic capital of the ancient Moroccan empire.
It is the town of the thousand and one nights, a mythic place and a gathering place for the people looking for unusual and astonishing
sensations.
It is with Fez, Meknes and Rabat, one of the imperial cities of Morocco.
It has an incredible atmosphere, filled up with intense flavours, bright colours and frenetic sounds. It is a chameleon, changing, like the
big cosmopolitan cities.
The first name to this city was « Marroukeck » (« come quickly ») ... due to the reality and the fact that many
tourists wanted to stay forever in the city between its souks and its streets hidden from the sun, drinking a mint tea, listening to the
music, boatmen, dentists, snakes charmers, tellers of good fortune, sales of unusual objects and jugglers, concentrated on the famous, exotic
and frenetic Jemaa el Fna square.
The night life seems more intense in the streets than in the closed premises. It does exist night bars and typical restaurants spread in
the entire city.
Places of interest:
The Jemaa el Fna square: declared in 2001 as Masterpiece of the Oral Heritage by the UNESCO, it is the
main square of Marrakech. It is located near the Koutubia, always ruling by its minaret. Every day the square lives through its markets of
fruits and vegetables, medicine, souvenirs...
In the day, the square let the storytellers, snake charmers, dancers, drinks salesmen, acrobats…converting everything into a gigantic show.
Mosque Koutoubia or Mosque of books: This mosque was built in 1158 by Almohade Yacub el-Mansur. Its
imposing minaret is the twin sister of the "Giralda" of Seville and measures 69m. it is the highest building of Marrakech.
The gardens of Menara: in the outskirts of Marrakech, there is a beautiful lake put in place by the
Almohads in the 12th century, to provide water in this West area of the city. In the 19th century and in the centre of the south river, there
is an elegant pavilion which was built and which figure faces the Atlas Mountains, it is placed in a very impressive setting.
The Saadiens Thumbs: They were built under the reign of Ahmedal al-Mansur, who is the members of the
family of the Saadiens dynasty. They are all buried in this place. Those graves dated from the 14th century and are surrounded by high walls
that separate them from the Kasbah.
The Bahia palace: This palace was built under the reign of the great Vizir Ba Ahmed in the
late 19th century. It is composed of Riads, receptions halls, patios and gardens.
The Medina: has been declared as World Heritage by UNESCO in 1985. You will appreciate from the top of
the building the great religious structure of the city.
The Majorelle gardens: It is the botanical garden of Marrakech. It was conceived in 1924 by the French
painter Jacques Majorelle. In the garden, you will note a great variety of vegetables that also served sheltering 15 species of birds.
